John Nelson settles on Long Island.

One of the few residents of the island, Nelson becomes one of the leaders of the rebellion against Gov. Andros in 1689 and subsequently purchases most of the island. The island is later purchased by from his heirs by Charles Apthorp, and from his heirs by James Ivers in 1791, by his heirs to Thomas Smith in 1847, and by the Long-Island Company in 1849.
